Michael H. Shuman is an economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, and Director of Research and Marketing for Cutting Edge Capital. He has authored, coauthored, or edited eight books. His most recent book, just published by Chelsea Green, is Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Move Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity. His previous book, The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006), received a bronze prize from the Independent Publishers Association for best business book of 2006. He helped co-found BALLE, which represents 22,000 local businesses in North America in 80 communities.

Mr. Eakes co-founded Self-Help, a community development lender, in 1980 and Self-Help Credit Union (SHCU), a state-chartered credit union, in 1984. Self-Help supports the development of small businesses, affordable housing and consumer financial self-sufficiency with responsible loans and financial services and has provided nearly $6 billion in financing since inception. Mr. Eakes holds a law degree from Yale, a Master’s from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs at Princeton, and a BA from Davidson College. A native of North Carolina, he is a nationally recognized expert on community development finance and has been honored for his work by The Ford Foundation, as a Ford Visionary in 2011, and by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, as a MacArthur Fellow in 1996.
